What is Study Abroad?
UNSW Study Abroad is an opportunity for university students from all around the world to study at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia, and transfer credit to their degree back at home. Students are eligible for an official UNSW transcript on completion of their studies*.
You can study for one semester or one year in the Semester Program, where you will be enrolled in regular courses alongside local students studying for their degrees. There are also opportunities to participate in an internship if you are enrolled in the Semester Program.
Alternatively, you can study for six weeks of intensive study in our Summer School.
You can apply directly to UNSW Study Abroad if your university does not have a partnership agreement with UNSW. There are scholarships available to applicants with financial need and demonstrated academic merit.

Semester Program
Students wishing to study for one semester or one year enrol in the Semester Program. In the Semester Program, you can enrol in courses offered through hundreds of degree programs offered by the University of New South Wales. This means that you will be enrolled in classes alongside local students studying for their degrees, and completely immersed in the academic environment of UNSW.
What you can enrol in
Students in the Semester Program are required to be enrolled in a minimum of 24 units of credit (UOC) per semester. Most courses at UNSW are weighted at 6UOC, so for a typical full-time enrolment, you will be enrolled in four courses in one semester.
Subject to a few restrictions, you can choose to study almost any course at UNSW as long as you have the necessary prerequisite knowledge. Your academic transcript will be sent to the relevant academic authority where required to determine whether you have the necessary academic background.
The UNSW Online Handbook is an up-to-date reference of all courses currently offered by UNSW. Because not all courses are offered in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 each year, it is a good idea to also check the UNSW Online Timetable for course availability.
In the UNSW Online Timetable, the timetable for Semester 1 is posted in mid-November, and the timetable for Semester 2 is posted in late April. By looking through these two sites, you will be able to choose courses and have an idea of your timetable before you arrive in Sydney.

Pre-semester Short Course on the Great Barrier Reef
Students enrolling in the Semester Program also have the option of participating in the Pre-Semester short course conducted on the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland. The course is at an introductory level with no prerequisite requirements. Students with a biological science background may undertake advanced study.
The pre-semester credit program Coral Reefs: Ecology and Environment (course code MSCI2051) is conducted on Lady Elliot Island. The program is conducted for one week in mid-February and mid-July each year.
This course involves lectures, on-site marine observation and discussion of topic areas such as corals, types of reefs, water characteristics, reef communities, environmental issues and management of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The field trip is conducted on the reef at Lady Elliot Island and includes study of the reef flat, its inhabitants, their distribution and interactions, the reef environment and its measurement. Diving is not required as part of the practical work, but recreational diving and snorkelling are available.
Lady Elliot Island is the southernmost coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef, situated 80 kilometres northeast of Bundaberg. The 42-hectare island is an integral part of the Capricornia section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. February is the turtle and bird nesting season and July offers whale watching.

Internships
UNSW Study Abroad manages an internship program to expose students to rprofessional work practices central to their studies. Internship programs are available in the fields of Marketing, Banking and Finance, Social Science and Policy, Media Studies, Biological and Environmental Sciences.
Internship students are placed in a workplace for two full days each week, and also have additional academic contact hours. The internships are carefully planned programs of theoretical study, supervised by an academic coordinator and culminating in a written research project, combined with specific tasks monitored by a supervisor in the workplace. Students are assessed on the basis of satisfactory workplace performance, a journal, a final research project, and an exit report.
How to apply
Students undertaking an internship enrol in the Semester Program, and need to complete a separate internship application form. The internship is offered as an academic course during the semester for 6 units of credit. Internship students must also enrol in other courses to make up a full-time study load.
Some prior academic background knowledge is required to be eligible for an internship placement. Academic coordinators will assess the suitability of applications.
